EU–Russia energy relations

Russia’s position as one of the world’s largest suppliers of natural gas makes energy a prominent feature in Russian external relations. To a lesser extent, Russia is also an oil producer. The depletion of reserves in other regions could strengthen Russia’s position.

How does European dependence on Russian energy shape its foreign policy? Is there a common European stance towards Russia or do member states pursue bilateral relations? What is the role of competing projects such as the North and South Stream pipelines and Nabucco? What is the role played by transit countries? We will also take a look at the future: will obsolete technology erode Russia’s current position or will (foreign) investments and the exploration of new reserves such as in the Arctic region strengthen it?
